Just re-read this and I forgot how boring it gets. Generally a good story but it spends way too much time on descriptions, repeats ideas a lot without really complicating them much, and just doesn't have a ton that I found to be unique or interesting - Louise erdrich is much better if you're wanting a native American focus. Tim Obrien is better if you want a war focus. If you're looking for poetry, then there are just a ton of better options. If you cut about 40% of it and re-wrote the ending 10%, it'd live up to its reputation.
