A Halloween loving town, murder mystery, and twist that made me gasp. Candy Coated Murder by Kathleen Suzette is a charming and cozy mystery with the right amount of suspense. Mia Jordan never expected to return to Pumpkin Hollow after ten years away. Her hometown celebrates Halloween all year long, but its beloved traditions are in jeopardy. Mia's homecoming takes an unfortunate turn after she publicly criticizes her unpleasant neighbor, Hazel Martin. Of course, Hazel is subsequently found murdered. Mia suddenly finds herself at the center of a homicide investigation. Clearing her name means helping to uncover a killer among the town's eccentric residents. She eventually finds herself tasked with fighting to preserve everything that makes Pumpkin Hollow special. The atmosphere was one of my favorite aspects of this book. Pumpkin Hollow reminded me so much of Halloweentown, a beloved childhood movie that still holds a special place in my heart. The year round Halloween festivities, quirky residents, and small town charm created such a fun setting. I loved the nostalgic feeling of visiting a town where Halloween is an identity worth protecting. I was rooting for Mia to clear her name and for Pumpkin Hollow to preserve its Halloween traditions. The final twist had me on the edge of my seat. I actually gasped when the culprit was revealed. I love a cozy mystery that can maintain its playful and comforting atmosphere with a shocking revelation. Think Halloweentown with a murder investigation instead of magic. I'd happily return to Pumpkin Hollow for another mystery. Candy Coated Murder is a delightful choice for those who love small town mysteries, Halloween nostalgia, and surprising twists without graphic violence or paranormal elements.
