Buried Road: A Novel

By Katie Tallo

“A fast-paced, exciting, missing persons thriller with a heart pounding twisty final third that I very much enjoyed. Katie Tallo is a big new talent.”—New York Times bestselling author Adrian McKinty In this edge-of-your-seat thriller—the follow-up to the international bestselling Dark August and Poison Lilies—Gus Monet and her daughter embark on a perilous road trip to find a missing person. When the love of her life disappeared on a camping trip, Gus Monet was devastated. Her daughter was only nine at the time, but young Bly still remembers the heartbreak vividly. Howard had been like a father to her. He was a journalist working on a story that took a dark and dangerous turn. The last time they saw him, he was going to meet a source he believed could blow the story wide open. Three years later, shocked to see Howard’s obituary in the paper, Gus and Bly are drawn back to Prince Edward County where he was last seen and where the camper Howard was driving has been found. Sneaking into the camper, mother and daughter find what investigators missed. Hidden behind a secret panel are Howard’s notebook, cell phone, and a video message recorded right before he vanished, evidence that turns the cold case red hot. Searching for answers, Gus and Bly vow to follow the story Howard was pursuing and to expose whoever went to deadly lengths to stop him from revealing the truth. Told in the compelling, thoughtful voice of young Bly, this edge-of-your-seat thriller ratchets up the tension, culminating in a heart-pounding, soul crushing, shocking finale. Infused with vivid summer imagery, set among eerie abandoned places, and steeped with sinister small-town secrets, Buried Road is the story of a young girl and a mother whose reckless resolve leads them ever closer to lethal danger—but ultimately might be what ensures their survival.

I always enjoy a book that is set in a location I know. It added to the experience being able to picture the landscape. I found it an interesting read with just enough suspense to keep me flipping pages.

"The Buried Road" by Katie Tallo is a story that progresses gradually with well-planned pacing, keeping readers engaged and eager for more at the end of each chapter. The characters of Bly and her mother, Gus, are outsiders who return to Prince Edward County after discovering an obituary for Howard, who had disappeared three years earlier. The only father Bly has come to know. The story revolves around Gus and Bly as they follow a trail of 'breadcrumbs,' questioning their trust in people they encounter along the way. I love the author's sprinkle of humor throughout the novel. I enjoyed Gus's take-no-shit attitude while Bly was learning to become independent. Bly is a well-behaved preteen who inherited her mother's sass and grit. Both characters are witty and charming, and Katie Tallo provides great character development. As the story unravels the dynamic duo finds themselves in a series of troubles. She keeps you guessing throughout.

I love, love, loved the novel ‘Buried Road’ by Katie Tallo! The story centers around a dynamic mother daughter duo, Gus and Bly Monet, who are searching for their beloved & missing Howard (esssentially Gus’ “husband” and Bly’s “dad”) who went missing 3 years ago on their annual camping trip. Howard was a journalist who was following a story and stumbled onto something more sinister lurking below the surface. After he mysteriously vanishes without a trace, headstrong and determined Gus and Bly desperately search for Howard following “breadcrumbs”. This story had so many twists and turns and I never saw the ending coming. This is by far one of my top reads this year so far! If you’re on the fence about reading this…..go read it like now! Highly recommend! Thank you HarperCollins Publishing and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
