Another book that is so good I read it twice. The first time I read this, I forgot to log it, but this time I have to share the recommendation. Tiago Forte’s system for information management and organization is crucial in a world of communication overload. This book and the systems contained within act as an operating manual for life and help you to develop a bias to action by just simply taking note.
The first principle of the book is rooted in the rule I have seen at the most successful companies I have worked at: WRITE IT DOWN. Then, search for it. There is a real sense of presence that is created by note-taking. The act gives room for the development of the creative parts of the brain and self by collecting the world as we experience it. We can then later coalesce these observations into a synthesized output that captures what makes us human and conveys that into others’ experiences.
Forte establishes early and repeats the mantra that note-taking is timeless. He builds upon that assertion by demonstrating how note-taking apps take an asynchronous and passive practice and transform it into something that can be turned into continually active and available as a real digital assistant. Your own personal life wiki of sorts.
Forte has also created a whole ecosystem of tools and resources to help you take better notes and organize information more effectively. I use these systems for my book reviews and book clubs. This book in particular sits between self-help, productivity, and philosophy. I highly recommend it; especially in an age where everything is stealing your attention.
yet another this could've been a blogpost book. there are things to take from the book if you're new to this whole sphere but as someone who is a notion enthusiast, there was nothing new so sounds like i already have a second brain?
As a busy work-from-home mom with more tasks than I know what to do with, I was really excited to learn a method that could help manage my ever-growing mental load. The premise of this book is to present how to create a "second brain" by creating a support system digitally to store everything from notes to projects to quotes to websites and videos to view later.
Although I did glean some useful tips, including what the author coined as the "PARA" system, I felt that just as it was getting good the author took a hard left at project management. Then, he circled back to a crash course on note taking that bordered on remedial. I was really hoping for more of an insight on the inner workings of his system.
I think this book would be much better suited in the hands of someone looking to learn about knowledge management in a professional environment, with a focus on entry level project management, or even a college student looking to enter the project management field. The author does provide helpful resources which I will be sure to research and use. It also has a great section on mindset and observing challenges.
