Brotherless Night: A Novel

A courageous young Sri Lankan woman tries to protect her dream of becoming a doctor in this “heartbreaking exploration of a family fractured by civil war” (Brit Bennett, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Half).

“An achingly moving portrait of a world full of turmoil, but one in which human connections and shared stories can teach us how—and as importantly, why—to survive.”—Celeste Ng, New York Times bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere

Jaffna, 1981. Sixteen-year-old Sashi wants to become a doctor. But over the next decade, a vicious civil war tears through her home, and her dream spins off course as she sees her four beloved brothers and their friend K swept up in the mounting violence. Desperate to act, Sashi accepts K’s invitation to work as a medic at a field hospital for the militant Tamil Tigers, who, following years of state discrimination and violence, are fighting for a separate homeland for Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority. But after the Tigers murder one of her teachers and Indian peacekeepers arrive only to commit further atrocities, Sashi begins to question where she stands. When one of her medical school professors, a Tamil feminist and dissident, invites her to join a secret project documenting human rights violations, she embarks on a dangerous path that will change her forever.

Set during the early years of Sri Lanka’s three-decade civil war, Brotherless Night is a heartrending portrait of one woman’s moral journey and a testament to both the enduring impact of war and the bonds of home.

In 2023, the American Writer V.V. Ganeshananthan published the novel entitled Brotherless Love. Ganeshananthan is of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. The novel, Brotherless Love is set during the Sri Lankan Civil War. Most of the book took place in the 1980s. Part of the last chapter of the novel took place in 2009. The main character of the book is a high school student named Sashikala “Sashi” who wants to be in medical student and who wants to become a doctor. Sashikala has four brothers. Sashikala has a crush on her oldest brother’s friend named K who is also Sri Lankan Tamil. Sashikala’s family are Sri Lankan Tamils, so the family is caught up in the rising political violence between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Nationalists, the most prominent of these groups in this novel is the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The novel follows Sashikala as she enters medical school and the fortune of her family during the Sri Lankan Civil War in the 1980s. The pivotal event in the book is the anti-Tamil riot by mobs of Sinhalese Sri Lankans in Colombo in 1983 with tacit support by the Sri Lankan government. I do not know that much about the Sri Lankan Civil War, so I learned from reading Ganeshananthan’s book. I believe that Ganeshananthan’s Brotherless Night was a well-done novel about the effects of the Sri Lankan Civil War on a Sri Lankan Tamil family. Works Cited: Gauldie, Robin. 2000.
