It's been awhile since I have read a really good, dystopian like novel. (I said LIKE, because Broken Skies has a more Science Fiction feel to it.)With the added flare of aliens, I knew this was something that I HAD to read. I am so glad this was put on my radar because there are so many elements to love.

One thing that has always been a huge thing for me in a dystopian, was the back-story. What happened? Why did it happen? Why did certain people survive, while others didn't? However, in Broken Skies, the full lack of back story just works. I don't need the details to find out what happened. It just IS. That, and the fact that the main characters weren't around when it happened, made is less important to me. If that makes any sense.

I do however, feel like this will be an important aspect in the coming novels. It's just a gut feeling.

Jax is the type of character that I love and hope for in this genre. She is fierce, loyal, stubborn, loving and honestly? Pretty Bad A$$. She feels weak and hopeless, due to a traumatic event but she is far from it. After she teams up with Lir, an alien that was left behind, she learns a few NOT SO GOOD THINGS about herself (and her brother), that would crumble most. Her protective nature and deep-rooted loyalty to all those that she loves, is my favorite thing about her.

Lir is an intriguing character. I was curious as to why he took to Jax so easily, because of the supposed hatred of humans. Yet at the same time, he saw the greatness that is Jax and started to open up to her. He is full of secrets though and there were times when I didn't know when he was "acting" or was truly being himself. Their budding romance was slow to start but that is the BEST kind.

I loved every aspect of this world. Jax and her brother Jase, are residents of a settlement camp, focusing on rebuilding (and populating) the world. Their expectations of both men and woman was hard to swallow at times, but that makes it so much better. You understand Jax's need to leave - to be herself. I was fascinated by the alien's too, of course. They are similar in appearance to humans, but there is SO much more to them than that. We slowly learn over time what all they can do, why they came to Earth and the full scope of their politics. Secrets EVERYWHERE. Not to mention, several of the plot twists blew me away.

The ending had me FLOORED. There are several revelations in the last 1/4 of the book and even though I grumbled a few, "ARE YOU EVEN KIDDING ME!?" and "YOU ENDED THE BOOK THERE?" it was BRILLIANT. I cannot WAIT for book 2!

If you haven't read this one yet, you are missing out on this precious find. Highly recommend!
