I found this to be highly enjoyable reading. The characters were well-developed and effectively portrayed.
In BC, Beth is married to Frank and they live together managing a farm. They live a quiet life, until Beth’s first love, Gabriel, moves back in town. Beth reconnects with Gabriel while helping with his son Leo.
We get glimpses into their teen summer romance and what tore them apart. We also see Beth’s stable life with Frank, but learn that there’s more than meets the eye. There’s pain, mourning and heaviness that they don’t discuss. But, Gabriel has a listening ear…
This read was maddening to me, in a good way! As much as I love second chance romance I could not get behind this one. As much as I hated the FMC Beth and her selfish actions, I could not take away from what a great read this was.
The setting, the writing, the characters, the plot, the narration - all vivid, layered,
and top notch. This is the ideal book club selection because there’s SO MUCH to dissect, so many differences of opinions and so much emotion poured into the reflective themes of grief, love, and the possibilities of what could have been.
I still wonder, was Beth happy in her marriage, or was she settling? I love it when an author envelopes me with a tug of war of thoughts and emotions.
✪There were characters I hated (Beth), characters I felt for (Frank).
✪There were aspects that intrigued me (rural life on a farm), and things that endeared me (close family dynamics).
✪There were aspects that left me wondering… what is going on here, what happened, I need to know (the trial).
✪There were aspects that left me saddened!
✪There were aspects that left me seething (the aftermath for which I blame Beth for).
✪These character rich stories are the ones that stick with me most.
Excellent story telling!! Epic buddy read!!
