Brigands & Breadknives (Legends & Lattes, 3)

By Travis Baldree

An instant New York Times, USA Today, and Indie bestseller!

Return to the fantasy world of the #1 New York Times bestselling Legends & Lattes series with a new adventure featuring fan-favorite, foul-mouthed bookseller Fern

Fern has weathered the stillness and storms of a bookseller’s life for decades, but now, in the face of crippling ennui, transplants herself to the city of Thune to hang out her shingle beside a long-absent friend’s coffee shop. What could be a better pairing? Surely a charming renovation montage will cure what ails her!

If only things were so simple…

It turns out that fixing your life isn’t a one-time prospect, nor as easy as a change of scenery and a lick of paint.

A drunken and desperate night sees the rattkin waking far from home in the company of a legendary warrior, an imprisoned chaos-goblin with a fondness for silverware, and an absolutely thumping hangover.

As together they fend off a rogue’s gallery of ne’er-do-wells trying to claim the bounty the goblin represents, Fern might find the courage to step off the beaten path in order to find her true self.

For whatever reason, this one just didn’t hit the same way the first two books in the series did for me. There were some great action scenes, and Fern’s foul mouth and sassy demeanor, along with Zyll's, had me laughing out loud. But overall, the book felt just okay and a little boring. I think it might work better as a standalone novel. Bummer.

Cozy? Sure. It was cute and filled with whimsy. I love a found family and this definitely had some endearing characters.

But…Oh. My. God. I. Was. So. Bored!!! This was more about opening and running a business day in, day out than high fantasy fun. Maybe if it had been shorter I’d have enjoyed it more.

I will say though, I haven’t read food descriptors like this since Redwall, so…it has that going for it.

Somehow even better than the smashing hits before.
