I have been a fan of Kristen Bailey for a long time and this book confirms why. This story is hilarious, it is heart-warming, it is deep, it is filled with twinkly lights, roaring fires, s'mores. sledding, hot chocolate, gingerbread, crinkling ice, white snow bending the branches of the trees and reflecting the moon and twinkling stars, it is the story of two people, complete opposites, a relationship that shouldn't work but it just does, or as Phoebe's wise sister says "yin and yang" Joshua Albright is a research fellow at LSE, a nerd with Clark Kent glasses, he escaped from New York to London leaving behind an ex fiancé who broke his heart, and a worried family. Because the university rooms were let out in the holidays, Joshua found himself housesitting two fish for a delightful family who were travelling to Devon to spend Christmas with their father, he didn't realise that the family also had a whirlwind sister. Phoebe Albright burst into his life like a human hurricane, Phoebe lived life to the full, she was sassy, feisty, flirtatious, quick witted and fiercely loyal, she was an events manager but had done a masters in psychology, Phoebe lived for the day and this day was Christmas Eve and she would prove to her family that she could be trusted. Phoebe had been tasked to pick up a dog from a rescue centre and take it to Devon a a surprise Christmas present for her two beloved nieces (the dog goes on to steal the show 😉🐶) As this story unfolds, Phoebe's car breaks down and she cajoles the hapless Joshua to lose his elf slippers and his mashed potatoes and drive her and the dog, in the ever worsening snow, to Devon in his old orange VW Beetle, The four hour journey didn't go as planned the dog would only stop howling when they played Stevie Wonder, the snow kept coming, the traffic was crawling and what follows is chaotic, wonderful and hilarious. What greets Joshua when they come to the end of their journey, overwhelms him, it was the England that he imagined, a thatched cottage with leaded windows and twinkly lights, a welcome that he couldn't have expected and a Christmas that he will never forget. When Joshua invited Phoebe to spend New Year in New York with him she jumps at the chance, she was like a child in a sweet shop when she saw the yellow taxis and everything she equated with New York from the films that she has watched, Joshua's wealthy family welcome her with open arms, they were so different from her own family but she liked them instantly. Phoebe had yet to come face to face with the snooty Avery, Joshua's ex, at her family's annual New Year ball, in true Phoebe style, she makes a big impression, and lets just say, i don't think that they will be invited next year. The friendship between Phoebe and Joshua grows, neither of them knew which way they were going, he was on the rebound and she wasn't the settling down type but it is truly emotional when they finally follow their hearts. I heartly recommend this magical Christmas story, Thank you Storm Publishing and Net Gallery for this ARC, me review is totally voluntary
