When my daughter was born, I bought her “gender neutral” clothes and toys. I vowed not to limit her to stereotypically female activities. Yet from the moment she could speak, she would pick up two sticks and deem them “mommy and baby stick.” Then my son was born… and to him… two sticks were either two swords, drum sticks, spears, or fire-starting instruments.
Meeker acknowledges the innate differences present in most boys/girls. I found this book deeply re-assuring as a single mom raising a son- “sometimes masculine energy has to bump up against masculine energy.”
She pointed out the tragic lack of GOOD male role models in our current culture (think bumbling idiot dads in sitcoms). And the need to raise men who are emotionally intelligent but also willing to protect and lead.
