Bones & All

Now a major motion picture from Luca Guadagnino starring Taylor Russell, Timothée Chalamet and Mark Rylance, screenplay by David Kajganich!

Maren Yearly is a young woman who wants the same things we all do. She wants to be someone people admire and respect. She wants to be loved. But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it's done to her family and her sense of identity, for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her--how they judge her. She didn't choose to be this way.

Because Maren Yearly doesn't just break hearts, she devours them. Ever since her mother found Penny Wilson's eardrum in her mouth when Maren was just two years old, she knew life would never be normal for either of them. Love may come in many shapes and sizes, but for Maren, it always ends the same--with her hiding the evidence and her mother packing up the car.

But when her mother abandons her the day after her sixteenth birthday, Maren goes looking for the father she has never known, and finds much more than she bargained for along the way.

Faced with a world of fellow eaters, potential enemies, and the prospect of love, Maren realizes she isn't only looking for her father, she's looking for herself.

4.5 stars. Definitely unlike any book I’ve read before.

Not too shabby! It's not every day that you come across a book about horror topics that doesn't lean into the gore and related shock effects, but Bones & All managed to tell a compelling coming-of-age story with enough detail so you knew what was going on but leaving enough to your own imagination to make the story be as gruesome as you wanted. From seeing the trailer for the movie and reading some other synopses for this novel, it sounded like it was going to lean heavily into the coming-of-age-misunderstood-teenagers-love-story kind of stuff, but it certainly went a different direction (and I'm glad it did).

Certainly not the ending I expected either!

This book was short, but still enjoyable. I would have preferred it to be longer in order to go more in to detail about Maren’s feelings and perspective. I do think the ending was a bit abrupt, although maybe that was an artistic choice. I would have also liked for Maren’s relationship with Lee to have developed more. I did appreciate what this book says about family, and about being different. How hard it can be to fit in. I thought Maren’s relationship with her mother was interesting and made me think deeper. How does a mother love a child like that? Was she a good mother for what she did? Or bad for leaving? Raising a child like that would be an impossible task. All in all it was a good, thought provoking book.

I was into it up until she ate her boyfriend. Though looking back at it, it cracks me up
