Black Leopard, Red Wolf (The Dark Star Trilogy)

In the stunning first novel in Marlon James' Dark Star trilogy, myth, fantasy, and history come together to explore what happens when a mercenary is hired to find a missing child. Drawing from African history and mythology and his own rich imagination, Marlon James has written a novel unlike anything that's come before it: a saga of breathtaking adventure that's also an ambitious, involving story. Defying categorization and full of unforgettable characters, Black Leopard, Red Wolf is both surprising and profound as it explores the fundamentals of truth, the limits of power, and our need to understand them both.

The book is so wonderfully made. The writing was very descriptive, it had a strong sensory experience. James’s imagination is superb.

This one is not for the faint of heart. It goes to some really dark places... For those that need them check for trigger warnings... I didn't dislike the book. I spent about 40% thinking if nothing changes in the story in the next 10% I might "dnf". I was confused, but now I know why. Our main character was also putting things together. Tracker was hired to find a boy, and he wasn't the only one looking. Tracker was given multiple stories and attempting to "sniff" through the truth wrapped in lies... The horror aspect also threw me off. I'm not reel big on human flesh consumption. Just sayin'. What really kept me continuing the book was the friendship between Tracker and Leopard, and wondering what put him in front of an Inquisition Preist. I am doubtful I will pick up another in this world, but have no regret with this read, as I continue to discover more of what I jive with over other darker themes.

Violent, crude and relentlessly long - had to give up.
