I'm a huge fan of crime thrillers. There are so many different routes an author can go when it comes to this genre of fiction. However, I do find that most authors tend to end their books with the killer dying. It doesn't serve as a form of justice, even though they try to portray it as such. Just because the lead detective/cop shoots the killer doesn't make it a successful ending. There is no closure in that. No justice for the families.
With that being said, Black Heart did an excellent job of turning that cliche into something more dramatic. The killer is caught and brought in but then kills herself in custody. That is more realistic than other thrillers I've read.
I was frustrated by the actions and thought processes of our protagonist, Det. Dan Riley, at the end. He was fighting his feelings toward Rebecca while he was about to arrest her. It gave the impression that he was falling in love with her even after the heinous crimes she committed.
All in all, this was an excellent listen. I think I might read the rest of this series rather than listen to them.
