Battle Royale: The Novel

Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller envisions a nightmare scenario: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan--where it became a runaway best seller--*Battle Royale* is a *Lord of the Flies* for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world.

listen. LISTEN. the story was fucking cool. but the hypersexualization of 15 year olds on every fucking page was way too much. it was just so much sex and they only talked about sex and r*pe and crushes while in complete and utter peril and it just totally ruined it for me.
I loved this book! There was, of course, large amounts of violence, however, that should have been a given considering the plot and summary of this book. The story was well-thought out, especially the game, and provided a good view of what humans do under immense pressure. Definitely a book made to make you think, so if you are looking for a quick and easy read, this isn't for you.
