Angels: A Novel

After catching her husband having an affair and being fired from her job, Maggie Walsh suddenly finds her perfectly organized existence has become a perfect mess. She decides, for the first time in her life, to do something daring -- and flees to her best friend, Emily, in the faraway wonderland of Los Angeles. In this mecca of tanned, beautiful bodies, unsvelte, uncool Maggie is decidedly a fish out of water. Yet, overnight, she's mixing with film folk, pitching scripts, even experimenting with sex -- and discovering that the end of a marriage is not the end of the world.

I get that this book is beautifully written, but this book made me suffer. It made me suffer a great deal, on almost every page. The worst part was in Chicago, but things never 100% rebounded after that. I might be a sensitive flower but I really couldn't handle it.

Book 12: So Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson is one of my faves. This book is partially set in Phoenix, where I lived from age 10-19, and then back and forth (escaping, returning, escaping...) Somehow, even though street names were those of Phoenix, I never really got the feel for it. It seemed like it was all degradation and bad choices. Other Denis Johnson has degradation, bad choices, humanity, and even some humor in the form of awkward terribleness--think the baby bunnies in the shirt in Jesus' Son... you cringe and you're sad, but somehow it has an element that makes you chuckle... am i a bad person? Anyhow, I have little interest in people this effing stupid.
