I really like this book, it explained so much more than the movie. I like that the book didn't have the Hollywood ending that the movie did, which confused me.
I love the first half. Some of the most engaging stuff I've read in fiction. I was obsessed with everything. The military base, aliens, time loop, battles, characters. All details were engaging. It was basically the movie which I also loved.
The second half I must admit drags. Rita is already a super soldier. Her story is not engaging as there is no development. We get a full background story telling us about her family, childhood, military career. Awfully pointless as we are in the battle for Earth to survive. Do we need a long flashback? At this point the book slows down to a crawl. The simple writing style made the first half brisk then ruins the last half as we don't really understand enough details to keep engaged. This is frankly how all time loop books work. Second half is always bad. The movie took the great first half then fixed the ending.
It's a nice little read. The first half is amazing making me think Japanese writers could pull off something truly spectacular yet I'm not familiar with their books just yet.
