This was my first Will Trent book and I really like him. I read the first two books before he was introduced but, if I remember correctly, Sara and Jeff were in them. It was a while ago. I've read several of Slaughter's standalone books and enjoyed them so I was excited to dive into this audiobook.

Let me start by saying that the narrator kicked all the ass. This woman was able to squeeze every bit of emotion from scenes. She literally had me on the edge of my seat several times. And nearly made my eyes leak a couple of times. Honestly, she made the experience engrossing.

Now, I think I would have rated this one lower if I had read it with my eyeballs. There were just some things that bugged me. Like, do married, rich, white women really live just to keep their husbands engaged enough to not leave them for a younger model? Are rich, white men twisted perverted assholes? I mean, I'd be willing to say they might be based on the network news channels and social media but still.

While I was listening to the book, I didn't mind some of those things because that's what the story was. And I know that Slaughter writes some really graphic, awful things. After That Night is actually not as torture-porny as some of her other books I've read which was nice. I figured out the big plot twist sort of early and wished I hadn't because it would have been better to not know. I'm deliberately being vague because I don't want to ruin anything for anyone.

The biggest positive for me was the characters and their relationships. The good guys, not the bad guys. They were all awful and very easy to hate and want terrible things to happen to them. But the cops and docs, I sort of loved them. This is where the narrator really made a difference. I FELT those characters. I wanted to go back and read the older books so I could know and feel them even more. And I just might. But not today. I need something lighter for a few days.

Big thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to meet Mr. Trent and the gang.

Really good book. Sad what the main character had to go through but glad it all worked out in the end. It’s terrible that this happens IRL

I loved this book, super dark and has a lot of stomach churning parts. But the story was amazing and satisfying.
