How do I express my love for this novel? There are so many layers, so many aspects to this book, that I don“t even know how to give it justice. This book was able to show the raw ugly side of addiction, rather then the glamorization we get from media all around us. It shows the damage addiction does, not only to yourself, but to the people you love the most around you. My heart literally aches for them. This is the first book in the Addicted series of 5 books.
................
"No one told me you can love someone and still be miserable. How is that possible?"
................
The story is about Lily and Lo. They're childhood friends who have grown up together, but they each have an addiction- she's addicted to sex, he's addicted to booze- and if their very wealthy and controlling families ever found out, they'd both be kicked to the curb... and so they lie. They live together and pretend to be a normal, perfectly functioning couple, and by doing so, each one gives the other an alibi and a safe zone to feed their addiction.
But sometimes there are moments when their pretend relationship feels like the most real thing in the world, because what neither of them are admitting out loud is that their feeling for each other are real...
................
"I“ll always be yours. No distance or time apart will change that, Lily. You need to belive that."
................
This was so raw and ugly and painful to witness. Seeing their addiction get the best of them. Them wanting to do better, but being so scared to let go of their addictions- realizing they are destroying them, but at the same time being comfortable in the familiarity of it.
Through all the ugliness, Lo and Lily are adorable. They love each other, but not enough to get help. Their journey to get help and support in this book was messy and heartbreaking. The way Lo and Lily lived their life destroyed me. Both of these characters are destructive, damaged and flawed. Lo is such a fantastic guy- he has so many issues of his own, but he loves Lily fiercely and wants her to be his!
................
"I love you, but I want to love you enough that I never choose alcohol over you. Not even for a moment. I want to be someone you deserve, who helps you rather then enables you, and I can't begin to do that until I get help for myself."
................
The book definitely gave me a lot of surprises. The characters have this undeniable chemistry. The book covers a lot more then sex and alcohol- it's filled with emotionally-driven romance, twists and drama. I was surprise to fine myself ugly crying with this book, especially the last parts. The ending was so emotional and a cliffhanger as well!
.................
"Wait for me". The words come out choked and pained. "I need you to wait for me."
................
I also loved all of the secondary characters- Ryke, Connor and Rose. I can't wait to read more about them and I“m happy to know they'll be getting their own books.
As a whole, this book is definitely a must-read. I loved the message it carries, specifically about accepting the person you love despite the imperfections, and holding on to that person until the very end. I also liked the way family love was emphasized here. It's a book with real emotional depth.
Spice: 2/5
Boy, was this a wild ride. A hot mess. There's nothing particularly likable about the main characters and I found myself getting really frustrated with them for most of the book. I suppose this is the reality of addiction, so it makes sense. The toxicity in this novel is insane, I couldn't believe my eyes when I read just how much Lily and Lo were enabling each other's demons. And the family drama... Phew
Having said that, the premise is interesting and I found it quite addictive (heh) to read. Probably gonna continue the series.
Was gonna be a 2/5 until the last 20% (or so). Connor and Rose are the sweetest ever, I'm looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes. Rose is the MVP of this novel and nobody can prove me otherwise. What an elegant, classy legend of a woman.
