Addicted: A Novel

Before there was E.L. James’s 50 Shades of Grey, there was Zane’s Addicted. Once described as “the hottest paperback in the country” by The New York Times and now a major motion picture, this wildly popular novel by the Queen of Erotica follows one woman’s life as it spirals out of control when her three extramarital affairs lead her down a dark and twisted path.
For successful Black businesswoman Zoe Reynard, finding the pleasure she wants, the way she wants it, is not worth the risk of losing everything she has: marriage to the man she has loved since childhood, a thriving company, and three wonderful children. But Zoe feels helpless in the grip of an overpowering addiction…to sex.
Finding a compassionate woman therapist to help her, Zoe finally summons the courage to tell her torrid story, a tale of guilt and desire as shocking as it is compelling. From the sensitive artist with whom she spends stolen hours on rumpled sheets to the rough and violent man who draws her toward destruction, Zoe is a woman desperately searching for fulfillment—and something darker, deeper, and perhaps deadly. As her life spins out of control and her sexual escapades carry her toward a dangerous choice, Zoe is racing against time to uncover the source of her “fatal attraction”—as chilling secrets tumble forth from the recesses of a woman's mind, and perilous temptations lead toward a climax that can threaten her sanity, her marriage…and her life.

I have heard a lot of good things about Zane and her intense “adult” books. So I picked one of her most popular books. Maybe I had high expectations…but I just thought “Addicted” was Okay. I felt like the story was rushed. The first half of the book was devoted to explaining how much Zoe loved her husband since childhood. I understand why that was an important part of the story…illustrating that she was addicted to sex even though she loved her husband…but it took too long to get to the story. As a result, so much was crammed into the second half of the book;…3 lovers, her car is vandalized twice, her friend is murdered, Zoe was almost choked to death, lover #2 confronts husband, husband gets arrested, Zoe steps in front of a moving truck, comes out of a coma, gets hypnotized, learns she was assaulted as a child, reconciles with her husband, 5 more murders, she is stalked and raped at gun point…Whew… it was hard to keep up. I haven’t written Zane off yet. I will probably try another book at some point...mainly because I want to support an African American writer.
Addicted follows a successful black woman who has it all. The husband, the family, the business, and the home, but lacks the sexual pleasure her body needs. She risks losing it all by stepping out of her marriage to get it by any means necessary, but is it all worth it? Sex addiction is not easy to talk about, but in order to get a grip on her life and save her marriage, she seeks the help of a psychiatrist, Dr. Marcela. When she starts seeing Dr. Marcela, all her secrets are revealed. Things she’s never repeated to anyone before. As she tries to fight temptations, other problems start to arise. Will she overcome her addiction and find fulfillment within her marriage or is all of the is too much to handle and she loses it all by giving in to her temptations??
Zoe is a lovable character and it’s somewhat understandable how her issues came to be, but the book didn’t do her much justice. Her husband’s story and reasonings were also flat and didn’t make sense.
Definitely a page turner! Zane kept me locked in with not only some spicy scenes but a DEEP storyline, character development AND TWIST on the usual spicy nature of Zane novels! (SA TW) Handles it very sensitively and bring awareness to child abuse, victims of SA etc.
Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. I've read this book so many times! This go round, I read it to one of my best friends who loves the movie, but isn't a reader. He wants me to read it to him again! Lol. This is and will always be one of my favorite books! I love their love story, and this is a book that helped me learn more about sexual feelings I had as a teen.
Loved. I think I liked the book way better than the movie. Great convos w the ladies
