This is a story about Marvellous Ways, an eighty-nine-year-old woman who lives alone in a remote Cornish creek, spending her days sitting by the river, peering through a telescope. And it's about Francis Drake, a young soldier who washes up in her creek, shattered by war and broken-hearted. It's about the magic in everyday life and the lure of the sea, the healing powers of storytelling and sloe gin, love and death, and how we carry on when grief comes snapping at our heels.

A YEAR OF MARVELLOUS WAYS is the unforgettable and completely captivating novel from Sarah Winman, Such beautiful prose. There were so many lines in this book that I cherished. You described this book as soulful and endearing, with a nod to Boy Swallows Universe in the feel of the prose. Who would not want to live a a world of Sloe Gin and mysticism with a background being a tapestry of nature. Poetic and whimsical with a flavour of Isabel Allende. Some felt that this novel was not practical, and at times especially with the ending it felt contrived with the familial connections. This book was a reinforcement of memories and a reawakening of emotions. Love is reflected throughout. Marvellous Ways is by far the favourite character with her odd nature and idiosyncrasy's and her love of the water.

My second Sarah Winman book. I love her turns of phrase and rich descriptions. The subtle undercurrents of the supernatural lend a playful note. A good read for late winter and grieving hearts. Encouragement for those feeling past their prime, and the young with broken hearts. I saved several quotes; will probably keep on my shelf to read again.

Not my usual type of book but I enjoyed it very much. A book about healing
