Dee Hendricks is invited to the magical hub city of Axia by her cousin, Wendy. Life in LA has been difficult, with a recent breakup and working 2 jobs to make ends meet. Surely a few days away should be fun. Plus she’ll see her grandparents who retired there when their magic started to fritz. Dee has no Magic and experiences culture shock with the residents of the hub. When Wendy has to return to work, Dee starts exploring on her own. A Chance meeting with an empath named Callie, leads to a possible new friendship. But is she who she appears to be? Dee also finds a baby dragon trapped in a dumpster. She frees him and takes him to the vet. She’s puzzled by everyone’s reaction to him until his collar is removed. To everyone but Dee, he appears to be a dangerous fire breathing dire wolf puppy. Later at the park, an overzealous park police officer seizes the dragon on suspicion of starting a magical fire that left a local businessman dead. Dee and Wendy are determined to find the real arsonist and free her dragon. But following the clues leads them straight into danger.
A Mythical Case of Arson is the delightful start to a new series by Melissa Erin Jackson. Dee and Wendy are both relatable characters navigating a fully realized magical world. Where Dee is hesitant, Wendy is enthusiastic and eagerly works to convince Dee to move to Axia. The mystery is well plotted and involves sabotage and conspiracies and several viable suspects. The dragon is adorable and his bond with Dee is sweet. I can’t wait to read more from this world.
