A Magic Steeped in Poison (The Book of Tea, 1)

A #1 New York Times Bestseller!

Judy I. Lin's sweeping debut A Magic Steeped in Poison, first in a duology, is sure to enchant fans of Adrienne Young and Leigh Bardugo.

I used to look at my hands with pride. Now all I can think is, "These are the hands that buried my mother."

For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it's her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her--the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.

When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom's greatest shennong-shi--masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making--she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning's only chance to save her sister's life.

But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger.

Pretty good. The world building was cool and the magic was SUPER cool, but something abt the writing style was weird to me, idk. Also it felt like things just kept happening to Ning that like piled up. Very much “I’m the protagonist” vibe and you really don’t learn much about other characters. Like NOTHING else happened to anyone else. Some of the challenges just kinda happened and you’re like “oh wow cool” because there was no prep or explanation on why or how Ning did things. Does that make sense? No? Cool, I can’t write either.

I enjoyed this book a lot especially the descriptions of food and drinks! Lost a star because it was sometimes hard to follow. Excited to start book #2!

This magic system felt so refreshing- I mean ITS TEA
BASED??? Plot was a bit repetitive at times and I
didn't connect to the characters well, unfortunatelv.
Felt too much like a mix of different ya books released
in the last couple of years in terms of tropes.
