A Line in the Dark

By Malinda Lo

A teenager enters the world of prep school drama determined to face the inevitable consequences in order to save her best friend—whom she is secretly in love with. Oh well, all is fair in love and war. “Offers some impressive storytelling, a chilling plot, and mean girls aplenty.”—Teen Vogue “Soaked in menace. . . . like Gone Girl meets Pretty Little Liars.”—Kiersten White, New York Times bestselling author of And I Darken and Now I Rise The line between best friend and something more is a line always crossed in the dark. Jess Wong is Angie Redmond’s best friend. And that’s the most important thing, even if Angie can’t see how Jess truly feels. Being the girl no one remembers is okay with Jess anyway. While nobody notices her, she’s free to watch everyone else. But when Angie begins to fall for Margot Adams, a girl from the nearby boarding school, Jess can see it coming a mile away. Suddenly her gift for observation is a curse. As Angie drags Jess further into Margot’s circle, Jess finds more than her friend’s growing crush. Secrets lie just beneath the carefree surface of this world of privilege, and when they come out, Jess knows Angie won’t be able to handle the consequences. When the inevitable darkness finally descends, Angie will need her best friend.

I really wanted to love this book, but there were some things that just didn't work for me.
1. The POV switch. It was really jarring. The second half needed to be told in third person, I get, but i think the first half should've also been third person. It was a really awkward switch.
2. The pacing - the first half was kind of boring, and the 'mystery' didn't become a major plot point until halfway through.
3. The twist didn't really pay off for me. There was no build up, and it seemed pretty random.
