10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World

For Leila, each minute after her death recalls a sensuous memory: spiced goat stew, sacrificed by her father to celebrate the birth of a yearned-for son; bubbling vats of lemon and sugar to wax women's legs while men are at prayer; the cardamom coffee she shares with a handsome student in the brothel where she works. Each fading memory brings back the friends she made in her bittersweet life - friends who are now desperately trying to find her . . .

I enjoyed the book, but some parts felt a bit too dark for me. I was especially curious about how the main character reached the ending, as it felt like there were gaps that could have been explored more. Overall, it was an intriguing read but left me wanting more clarity

What will you remember in the last moments of your life about the span of your lifetime? Who will care when you are gone? Leila is a sex worker, just murdered and left in a dumpster, whose last 10 minutes and 38 seconds are spent reflecting on various parts of her life. Fascinating concept that your heart would stop but your brain would continue for a little while after death. This read was particularly interesting to me, since I was also reading the memoir I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death at the same time. Both books explore similar themes.
