You could help children discover a love of reading
Your love of books could be the thing which helps children learn to read across the UK! Currently more than one in four children in England leave primary school unable to read well and Bookmark Reading Charity wants to change this.
Bookmark are a UK based children’s literacy charity with one simple mission: they want every child to read.
They do this through their volunteer-led reading programme, delivery of book packs to schools to promote reading for pleasure and the offer of grants for schools looking to develop a whole school reading culture, and much more.
Their brand-new initiative Bookclubs for Bookmark is asking book clubs and avid book readers to donate the cost of their book in March.
Reading isn't just about books. It's about reading a road sign, a safety manual, a birthday card. It's understanding a job application or the health information that could save your life. Children who don't read well by age 7 are six times more likely to drop out of school. These children are also more likely to go on to be unemployed, live in poverty, and even to have a shorter life expectancy.
Now, for as little as the cost of a book, you can change their story. Find out more and register your book club here (you’ll receive free bookmarks when you do!)
You can also volunteer to read with a child for just one hour a week either online or face-to-face, for six weeks. Bookmark’s online volunteering can fit around your schedule and there’s no need to travel. There are currently over 400 children waiting to read with a volunteer, can you help?
