A ROOM OF YOUR OWN BOOK CLUB is a national Book Club for at risk teen girls (12/13 to 18 years of age) — of all races and ethnic backgrounds in Canada. We celebrate teen girls, justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion! If you identify as a teen girl and you love to read, we are your home. Guess what? Our book club always has the author present! Our goal? Very simple...to Rock the Book Club World!
What makes our book club unique is that we buy the books for the young women. They receive the books six weeks in advance via their schools, and they have a chance to read the novel, digest it and write down their thoughts and questions ahead of time. We gather in person and online to have a book club discussion with the author in Toronto. Our book club is special in that we focus on Mental Health and Wellness, Community Building, Community Engagement and Social & Health Justice. Our book club goals are to improve literacy and reading comprehension and engage youth in learning how to contribute to their communities through understanding and embodying justice, empathy, and compassion.
All our book-clubbers are from the poorest areas in Canada. They suffer from housing, food, and clothing insecurity. They also suffer from lack of physical safety in their neighbourhoods.
