I read this for my book club and I didn't think I was going to enjoy it because it's very different from the kind of book I normally read, but I actually super got into it. My friend described it as a "book about books" which is true - it's pretty much a nerdy little book full of references to other books as well as about the life of a bookseller and the love of books. As someone who loves books, this book really resonated with me. It felt really...read more
Charming. Every single word is in the right place. I loved this testament to the power of words and by association, the power of books to convey so much human emotion. The répartée between A.J. and Amelia was witty and fun. The hapless efforts of A.J. as an accidental parent were delightful.
Initially, I began to read as it was our m monthly book club selection... Thought it would be if a classical nature. It surprised me for sure!!

A decent palate cleanser; easy read. Some strokes are applied rather hastily. The main characters are likeable, though, and the setting is somewhere you would want to visit. I'm most excited and the reading recommendations that I came away with.
This is an honest, real story, highlighting our need for connection to other bipeds whether we like it or not. We need each other...desperately. The main character (A.J.) is hopelessly flawed with curmudgeon-like qualities. He is seemingly unlovable, even unlikable. He is rude, selfish and reclusive. He is an anti-hero warning you to keep your distance.
And yet despite his attempts to frighten you off, you discover that you love him from start to...read more
