One Hundred Years of Solitude
"One Hundred Years of Solitude is the first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race. . . . Mr. Garcia Marquez has done nothing less than to create in the reader a sense of all that is profound, meaningful, and meaningless in life." --William Kennedy, New York Times Book Review

Wow! What a ride! I went over the last few pages 4 times. This strange and lurid tale of 7 generations of Buendia's definitely takes patience and perseverance, but the payoff is worth the battle! Poetically written and deserving of all the hype. That said, I got about 30% in and switched to audio. At times I both read and listened, to be sure I was following, and topped that off with the Spark Notes.
Magical realism throughout. This saga of the Buendias family reads like a fable or a soap opera. The family has interbred enough that there are potential weird health defects of their breeding. But seriously this was fun to listen to and just fantastical enough to not take very seriously.
